THIRTEEN

“No,” Monty said as we backed away from the table. “She is not your property or a tool to be used and discarded.”

“You are wrong on both counts,” Gault said. “I created her, and she has only one purpose: to die for me. Like you, runebearer, she must fulfill her purpose.”

“I’m going to have to second what Monty said,” I answered, drawing Grim Whisper. “She’s not yours and she’s not a tool to be used.”

“Very well,” Gault said. “We shall do this in a way you understand…with blood and pain.”

Peaches let out a low rumble as Gault placed his mug down slowly on the table. Energy flowed around him as he stared at us.

“What happened to not destroying the Randy Rump?”

“I lied.”

He slashed a hand in front of him and blasted us with a wave of energy.

Monty threw up a shield to deflect most of the impact as I fired at Gault. The wave of energy punched into us and flung Monty across the floor into the glass facade making up the front of the Rump, while it smacked me into a nearby wall…hard.

Gault stood with a look of mild surprise on his face as we bounced off the hard surfaces and got back to our feet.

“You’re still alive?” he said. “I’m impressed. I will strive to inflict greater pain on you both, then.”

I didn’t understand what he meant until I glanced behind Monty. The entire facade of the Randy Rump facing the street had exploded into small particles behind Monty.

“Holy hell,” I muttered under my breath as the wall I crashed into disintegrated. “What the—?”

I dove forward as another wave of energy headed my way. I fired Grim Whisper as I rolled into a crouch, but my entropy rounds didn’t even reach him. I saw Peaches blink out and reappear on a collision course for Gault.

Gault stood still and waited for my hellhound.

“Quaint, but ineffective,” Gault said as he caught Peaches by the scruff, gestured with his opposite hand, and tossed him outside, through a rune-inscribed window, shattering it using my hellhound’s body. “That should slow him down.”

Peaches landed across the street, bounced for several feet and came to a stop as he crashed into a brick wall, cratering it. He shook himself off, took several steps toward the Rump and collapsed with a whine.

“What did you do to my hellhound?” I demanded as I formed Ebonsoul. “What did you do?”

“I merely removed a layer of indestructibility,” Gault said, forming a pair of bright blue orbs and releasing them. “If I were you, I’d be more concerned with your own imminent demise. I’ll end your infernal creature after I rip the First Elder Rune from your bodies.”

<Run, boy! He’s too strong and he made you weak. You need to run away! Get safe!>

<Wherever you go, I go.>

Peaches managed to get to his feet and blink out, only to reappear next to me a moment later.

<I don’t want to lose you. You can get away.>

<You can’t lose me. I’m your bondmate.
